Salsa is one of the most popular forms of dance as it involves elements of fiery liveliness and sensuality making it a thoroughly enjoyable dance form. Though it might seem a difficult form of dance but you can learn the basics of salsa in no time and minimal practice. Salsa is a partner dance but involves individual steps and movements for both the partners as well. Usually salsa songs are a count of 4/4 but the dance doesn’t have the regular 4 beat steps and skips out on the fourth and the eighth count giving a slight pause to the dance.
Salsa is closed position form of a dance or a hand in hand type of dance I which man’s palm is facing up whereas lady’s palm is facing downwards. The stance consists of lady’s right hand in the man’s left hand and lady’s left hand on man’s shoulder whereas the man’s right hand is around lady’s waist. With the basic positioning and stance understanding you can move to basic steps and movements in salsa. Do not fret as you will be able to pull off all those amazing moves in just few practices. Steps To Do Salsa Dance
Basic steps for Men:
Step 1 – Move forward with your left foot. Your complete weight should be falling on the left foot with hardly any weight on the right foot but make sure you don’t pick the right foot up. Initially you can start with longer steps as they are convenient but over the time you will find that shorter steps make the salsa movements fast and neat giving it that fiery feel to the dance.
Step 2 – The next step includes shifting your weight back to your right foot from the left one while maintaining the same position you are in. Now you right foot should be the one holding all the weight.
Step 3 – Next take a step or slide your left foot back to either next to or just behind your right foot. In this step your weight should be evenly distributed over both of your feet.
Step 4 – Though technically this is a step but you don’t have to anything in it. You have to skip this beat but can use this beat as preparing yourself to shift your weight on your left foot again.
Step 5 – This step is a repetition of the first step but is in reverse order meaning your feet will have role reversals. In this step you have to take a step back with your right foot so that your left foot is not taking ay of your weight.
Step 6 – Again switch your wright from your right foot to your left foot without any change in the position.
Step 7 – Next take a step or slide your right foot back to either next to or just behind your left foot. In this step your weight should be evenly distributed over both of your feet.
Step 8 – As with the step 4 you don’t have to anything in this step and just have to skip this beat while using this beat to prepare yourself to shift your weight to your right foot again.
Keep repeating all these step and music and practice.
Basic steps for a Lady :
Step 1 – Take a step backwards with your right foot.
Step 2 – Step in the place using your left foot.
Step 3 – Get your right foot ahead either next to or slightly in front of your left foot.
Step 4 – Just as the fourth step for men even ladies have to miss this beat but you can use this skip of beat to prepare yourself for the weight shift in the next step.
Step 5 – Take a step forward using your left foot with it holding all your weight,.
Step 6 – Step in the place using your right foot.
Step 7 – Bring your left foot back either next to or slightly behind the right foot.
Step 8 – Repeat the skipping step.
